California Credentialed "Teacher Tips" As featured in Arbor's Newsletter ArborLinks: Word Problems Math word problems have been known to stir dread in the hearts and minds of many. I'd like to offer some tips, strategies, and resources to help assuage these fears. First and foremost, it is crucial to practice, practice, practice. There are just so many different kinds of word problems out there, and if you understand how to solve many different "setups," there are only so many left that can arise. Secondly, search for mathematical "key words." For example, "all together" means to add, "of" means to multiply. When working with fractions, including statistical samples, the total sample goes in the denominator while the part of the sample goes in the numerator. Thirdly, before attempting to solve the problem, list the important data. Also, take note of any extraneous information. Make sure to identify exactly what is being asked. Fourth, there are varying strategies for solving word problems (depending upon the given information and the question to be answered). These include: draw a picture, make a list (table), find a pattern, work backwards, guess and check, choose an operation, and logical reasoning. Back to Independent Study
