ADHD and Independent Study

ADHD is often is cause for concern and stress in the traditional school setting.  Some of the brightest, most creative students are also often those who struggle with ADHD.  Students often find it hard to remain seated in class for hours on end being forced to listen to teacher lectures and complete a seemingly endless stream of worksheets.  Boredom, behavior problems, low grades, low self-esteem, and many parent-teacher-administrator conferences often ensue.

Independent Study is often the perfect prescription for students with ADHD!  Gone are the daily morning struggles of making sure that your child is awake, fed, dressed, and prepared for school.  (As many parents of ADHD children know, this alone can be quite stressful.)  Children with ADHD generally thrive on the extra attention that they receive at home (as compared with a classroom of 30-40 other children).  They are afforded more freedom and the ability to take frequent breaks (without fear of retribution).  Ample time (which often means more than is allowed in the classroom) can be allotted for the completion of tasks.  Assignments may be oral as well as written.  Field trips (as learning experiences) are welcomed.  A  variety of different methods of learning can be employed, and instruction can truly be individualized.  Students can be afforded more time to focus on preferred subjects areas or learning activities.  For example, if the child is a kinesthetic learner, he or she can build models of  buildings (perhaps out of toothpicks) to learn about which types of building constructions would most likely withstand a strong earthquake.  Finally, at-home-learning eliminates the often-required several hours of daily homework that the student must complete (this after six or seven hours spent in the classroom).

Happily, most parents find that Independent Study children with ADHD often leads to more success in learning and fewer family problems.  The natural by-product is a lifelong love of learning and increased self-esteem.  Independent Study your ADHD child may be the answer you've been looking for!
